Bravo is Ledger Farm's first foal born on the farm!  Bravo's mother Bella came to Ledger Farm 8 months previous to his birth and the previous owner knew one of her stallions had gotten in with the mares but didn't think he had a chance to breed with any of them.  But luckily for all of us at Ledger Farm, he did, and Baby Bravo was born on April 9th, 2008!  Bravo is out of Earth To Bella, our beloved Paint mare, Bella and his father is a Paint Thoroughbred.  Bravo is very special to all of us at Ledger Farm is at this time planning on staying on with the Ledger Farm family for years to come!

The two days before Bella foaled out we knew she was going to foal soon because her teats had white wax that look similar to candle wicks.  The first day, all three of us on the Ledger Farm team, stayed in the barn for 24 hours waiting for her to go into labor.  The second day we stayed in the barn until 2 am and then took shifts every hour after.  From the 6:30 AM shift until we went down to do morning feed at 7AM, she had him!  We missed it by minutes!  When we walked in the barn, he had literally just hit the ground.  He stood in the first five minutes he was born.

One of the funniest things we learned about new born foals, is they have the hardest time lying down.  At first, they cannot figure out how to fold up their back legs.  They struggle to figure out how to fold them, until they are so tired they just plop down and pass out.  They have no trouble getting back up and for the first two days they continue to look like folding their back legs is a puzzle.  They have no problems with their front legs, it's just figuring out how to fold their back legs.  Very entertaining to watch!!

When Bravo was born, his coloring was classified as a smokey black.  We were unsure if that is going to be his forever color, or if he will shed this spring and be jet black.  Either way, we love him just as much as we do now!!
